Hello!
I hope you are having a fantastic summer & I know there have been a few questions about how to complete the packet and the Journaling for AQOTWF, hopefully this will help to clarify those questions:
1) In the back of your Journal you will be doing the Pre-Reading, Focus Activity items on the BEFORE YOU READ page.
I suggest a Page per section of the reading, this is to include any thoughts that you have BEFORE you read that section of the book, so please try to do this before you read versus doing all of the journaling after you read the entire book.
2) For the Background section you would READ this information, HIGHLIGHT any important details in it, and ANNOTATE (make notes) right on the section that you have just read (see the Orange highlights in the picture to the right).
3) For the remainder of the packet you would write directly on it, such as the page numbers of the vocabulary words, filling in the chart on Pg. 13, or answering the questions with details from the novel (quotes from the text) as well as page numbers where you found the information in your novel to review later.
4) Don’t forget to annotate in your novel as you are reading:
- Include thoughts of moments that you think are important, what do you predict will happen to a character in the future, what would your reaction in that same moment be?
- Vocabulary; how can you understand what is happening in the moment if you don’t know the word in the sentence, when in doubt, look it up! 🙂
- Character changes; like how they feel after the death of a comrade or a bomb attack
- Plot shifts; has something important happened that sends them to another location, has the chain of command shifted?
- Any Literary Devices you can recognize in the writing such as metaphors, symbols, allusions, similes, imagery, etc.
- CHAPTER SUMMARIES!! This is VERY important and will make reviewing for any quizzes or writings in the future MUCH easier!
