AP Lang-Tuesday the students were cohorted into their different Academy Book Clubs (AVID & Medical) as well as we have a group to track the overall plot & Authors Voice in the Novel:
- AVID (Green Journals: Cornell Notes)-Tracking the Success or Hindrances that Henrietta Lacks Faced in her life.
- EX: Hindrance, race & birth at this time
- EX: Success, Polio Vaccine was created from her cells
- MEDICAL (Red Journals: Patient Records Form)-Tracking the life of Henrietta from a Doctor/Patient perspective, what is her medical history, how did it effect her diagnosis, what treatments were prescribed?
- EX: Birth date, Death Date, 1st seen at John’s Hopkins, number of pregnancies, medical researcher data from the biopsy of her cells, etc
- Author’s Purpose (Yellow Journals: Cornell Notes)-This is the all encompassing group, how does Skloot craft the story, what motivates her, what is the BIGGER PICTURE of Henrietta’s Family, what is the social commentary on the medical care of Af. Am. at this time?
- EX: John’s Hopkins was primarily an Af. Am. hospital 20 miles from Henrietta’s home
- EX: The knowledge of Skloot’s teacher sparked her interest in the subject
Students discussed in their teams part 1 of the novel before being able to use their journal notes on the Quiz. As they are reading Part 2 (Due MON 9/25) they should be ANNOTATING; I distributed 2 sets of post-its and an envelop to keep them in the back of the journal. Part 2 will just be a Journal and annotations check, there will not be a test for this part. Students should be reading and journaling nightly.
English 3 & Honors-In class discussion we worked on ways to create a balanced argument using a proper Thesis Statement. This is vital for the FSA Retakes next week, as we were reviewing this there was not enough time to complete the Retakes for Summer Reading so they have ONE DAY MORE!!!! Quizzes will be completed at the beginning of the class period or parent phone conferences will be made in regards to grades.
