AICE and AP Literature Summer Reading Requirements

2024-25

If you are taking AP Literature or AICE Literature next year at Mandarin High, you are responsible for reading one of the following novels by the end of summer break. In addition to reading for pleasure, you should bear in mind you will be writing the first week of school about its language, its themes, and its emotional and visceral effect on you. The Chosen   by Chaim Potok      It’s about the intense, complicated friendship between two Jewish boys who meet in 1940s Brooklyn.

Dracula    by Bram Stoker               It’s a gothic horror story about a vampire’s attempts to gain a foothold in England in order to find fresh blood and the attempts of a group of courageous individuals to stop him.

The Hound of the Baskervilles    by Arthur Conan Doyle        It’s a detective novel featuring the brilliant Sherlock Holmes tackling a case that involves a centuries-old curse.

I Capture the Castle        by Dodie Smith        It’s a story told in diary form about a seventeen-year-old girl living in a dilapidated but beautiful castle in the English countryside with her fascinating and eccentric family.

Invisible Man     by Ralph Ellison      It’s about a young Black college student who leaves the South for New York City, experiencing a series of surreal encounters and incidents.

Kindred         by Octavia Butler           It’s a time-travel story in which a Black woman in the 1970s is summoned back in time to a farm with slaves in Maryland in 1815.

Nervous Conditions     by Tsitsi Dangarembga    It’s a coming-of-age story about a thirteen-year-old Zimbabwean girl who grabs the chance to study at a mission school when her brother dies.

Never Let Me Go      by Kazuo Ishiguro       It’s a dystopian tale that takes place in an alternate reality of England during the 1990s in which mass human cloning is authorized and performed.

Purple Hibiscus     by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie    It’s a coming-of-age story about a fifteen-year-old Nigerian Catholic teenager who experiences the emotional turmoil of her family coming apart and her first love.

A Separate Peace   by John Knowles     Set against the backdrop of World War II, the novel explores morality, patriotism, and loss of innocence through its narrator, Gene Forrester, in his relationship with classmate and friend Phineas.
